We find Mountains to be so many things: a challenge to overcome, always a place of solitude and inspiration, and occasionally, a unique opportunity for renewal.
It is a symbol of the nearness of God, something St. Patrick surely recognized early on in his 30 years of work as a missionary in Ireland.
Croagh Patrick, or “St. Patrick’s Mountain”, in western Ireland has huge religious significance.
It all started with the legend of St. Patrick praying and fasting there for 40 days in AD 441. On the 40th night, he banished all the snakes from Ireland by throwing a silver bell down the mountainside, knocking a pagan demon from the sky.
He went on to convert nearly the entire island to Christianity, reduce conflict between the pagan Celtic tribes, and established schools and churches throughout the country.
The Mountain, known locally as the “Reek”, is climbed by hundreds of thousands of people every year seeking the same as St. Patrick: an opportunity to be in a closer relationship with God.
