Thomas Merton was a 20th century prolific writer, thinker, mystic, and activist.
He was also a Trappist Monk for 27 years out of Kentucky who began hearing God calling him to the Catholic church, at first as a whisper while still a child attending protestant services in Long Island, NY then louder as a teenager in France where he grew up then briefly attended Cambridge in the UK.
He ended up at Columbia in NY where he was editor of the school paper, graduated, and was briefly a college professor.
It was during his college years in the late 1930's where he led a fast, careless lifestyle that he also began attending Mass and ultimately found his home and life's purpose.
We highly recommend picking up his autobiography, "The Seven Storey Mountain". You will be inspired and touched by Merton's beautiful and emotional witness to his life and the times he lived in.
